Pelling is one of Sikkim’s best places to slow down and actually enjoy the mountains. Set in West Sikkim, the town is known for views of the Khangchendzonga range, old monasteries, sacred sites and traces of Sikkim’s royal history.

Unlike places built around busy markets or packed sightseeing schedules, Pelling feels more spread out and peaceful. A day here can move from the modern Pelling Skywalk to centuries-old monasteries and ruins, with forests and mountain views filling the spaces in between.

Pelling is a good choice if you want nature, history and culture in the same destination.

The Chenrezig Statue and Pelling Skywalk give the town its most recognisable modern landmark, while Pemayangtse Monastery and Rabdentse Ruins take you much deeper into Sikkim’s past. A visit to Khecheopalri Lake adds another side of the region, with the lake holding religious importance for local Buddhist and Hindu communities.

This mix makes Pelling work equally well as part of a relaxed Sikkim holiday or a longer circuit through different parts of the state.

Pelling’s real speciality is its connection with Sikkim’s history.

Rabdentse was once the second capital of the former Kingdom of Sikkim, and its surviving ruins sit within a forested setting near Pemayangtse. Together with the monastery and surrounding landscape, it gives visitors a glimpse of Sikkim beyond its better-known mountain roads and viewpoints.

At the same time, Pelling remains closely connected to the mountains. On clear days, the Khangchendzonga range becomes a major part of the landscape rather than simply something seen from a single viewpoint.
